This seven-storey building clad in Jerusalem stone was erected on the ashes of the Maryina Roshcha Synagogue, a wooden building which had served this northern district of the Russian capital from 1925 until it burned down in 1993. Officially opened by President Vladimir Putin, the Chabad-affiliated Centre has a library, kosher restaurant, concert hall, gym and art gallery. It also houses the new Maryina Roschcha Synagogue, which can seat 2,000 people. It was designed by Yisrael Godovich, a former Chief Engineer for Tel Aviv municipality and a grandson of the Chofetz Chaim.
