European Day of Jewish Culture

The European Day of Jewish Culture will take place on Sunday 2 September 2007, with events in 30 countries across Europe. With 'open door' opportunities, exhibitions, lectures, concerts and more, the public will be able to discover the historic and cultural heritage of Judaism, grouped around the theme "European Routes of Jewish Heritage".

This volunteer-run day provides a glimpse into the physical, historical, and artistic conduits of European Jewry. Hundreds of volunteers from Jewish communities and other local organisations participate in the event, which attracts tens of thousands of visitors to Jewish sites and activities. Events will highlight the two-way exchange of ideas, beliefs, customs, and practices between Jewish communities and the different European societies of which they are a part.

Participating countries include Belgium, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Greece, Germany, Holland, Hungary, Italy, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Macedonia, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, the Ukraine, and the United Kingdom.

The day combines the European Day of Jewish Culture and the European Route of Jewish Heritage, previously separate events. This follows a recent ceremony in Strasbourg where the European Route of Jewish Heritage was awarded the title Grand Cultural Route of the Council of Europe. Organised by B'nai B'rith Europe, the European Council of Jewish Communities and the Red de Juderías de España and launched in 1996, the event became fully international in 2000.
