A new book has been published by the Jewish Religious Community of Latvia as part of an expansive programme of documentation and preservation of Jewish heritage sites in that country.
Jewish Cemeteries in Latvia by Meyer Meler (ISBN 9984-9-904-5) is the result of a documentary survey of almost fifty Jewish cemeteries identified and visited by Mr Meler and associates affiliated with the Museum and Documentation Centre "Jews in Latvia", as part of a survey sponsored by the United States Commission for the Preservation of America's Heritage Abroad. Additional support for the publication came from the Council of Latvian Jewish Communities, the Commission of the Historians of Latvia, and the Embassy of the United States in Latvia. The US Commission will soon release a separate report, which will also include information on Holocaust-era mass grave sites in Latvia.
Several other recent publications sponsored by the Riga and Latvian Jewish Religious Communities have also expanded our knowledge of Latvian synagogues and other sites. In 2004, an exhibition and book "Latvia Synagogues and Rabbis, 1918-1940" were prepared, based on the research and photo collection of the late Rabbi Nathan Barkan (1923-2003). In 2005, the Community published, under the direction of Rabbi Menachem Barkan, the highly detailed and informative "Map of Memorable Places of Jewish History, Latvia: Synagogues, Jewish Cemeteries, Burial places of the Holocaust Victims".
