Belgian Holocaust Memorial Defaced

Source: European Jewish Press (August 2006)

A Holocaust memorial, the "National Monument to the Jewish Martyrs of Belgium", was defaced in late July 2006. The monument, in the district of Anderlecht, Brussels, lists the names of over 25,000 Jews deported from Belgium to Auschwitz during the Second World War. Vandals ripped out the gate of the memorial's crypt, destroyed documents, broke windows, and emptied an urn at the site which contained ashes from victims of Auschwitz. The following evening, a demonstration in response to the incident was organized by the "Union of deportees in Belgium - Sons and Daughters of deportation".
