It appears that a wooden synagogue recently re-discovered in Kulautuva, Lithuania will not be preserved.
The synagogue, built in 1935, was uncovered in January when the masonry building that had been constructed around it in the Communist era was being demolished. Local preservation activists and Jewish representatives had pressed for the structure to be declared a protected monument and be saved.
According to a report on Lithuanian television, experts state that there is not enough authentic material left to warrant preservation of the building.
The structure will be dismantled and only some parts of it will be taken for display at the Rumšiškės open air ethnography museum.
Meanwhile, a real estate development project is under way at the site and new buildings will be constructed there.
