Starting today (Sept. 30), the historic Jewish cemetery in Siena will be regularly opened to the public on the last Sunday of each month. Until now, it has only been open on the European Day of Jewish Cuture and other special occasions. Initially, hour-long guided tours will be offered only at 10:30 a.m. Meeting point is at the main gate, on Via del Linaiolo, outside Porta Romana.
A cemetery in Siena was founded in the 16th century, and the oldest grave markers in the cemetery today date back to the 17th century. These are simple steles. Later graves include grander tombs and matzevot with some fine carved decoration.
The tour includes the cemetery as well as the pre-burial house, which includes a small exhibition.
Siena also has a beautiful synagogue, built in 1786 and located right off the city’s central Campo, that also is open to visitors on a regular basis.
